Growing your own marijuana can seem intimidating, but with tools like the propagation tray, the process is much simpler. Sowing seeds or cuttings in soil doesn’t seem complicated, it just requires digging a hole and placing them in. However, this process requires additional care, such as monitoring soil moisture, avoiding mold, dryness, and protecting the seedlings from other plants that can steal nutrients from them.
Given so many factors, having a controlled environment to germinate your marijuana plants is the best option, and for this, the propagation tray is the ideal tool. Follow this guide to learn how to germinate marijuana with a propagation tray.
What is a propagation or germination tray?
Propagation trays are containers of different sizes, commonly used to start crops in their early stages. These containers usually have dividers for planting multiple plants with adequate spacing, although they can also be large containers where you will have to manage your own space.

- These trays are for professional use, not recommended for inexperienced growers.
Traditional spread tray
Unlike other planting instruments that are ready to use from the moment you buy them, such as rock wool, you will need to add substrate in order to germinate marijuana with an empty or traditional propagation tray.

How to germinate marijuana seeds in propagation trays?
Gather your materials
Before you begin your grow, you should gather and prepare the necessary tools, including your propagation tray and propagation base and cover, small shovel, a garden watering can, and gloves, which you should disinfect to avoid transmitting diseases to your plants. You will also need to prepare your potting soil mix or get ready-made soil.
Choose your seeds
It is important to evaluate which strain of marijuana you plan to plant in your propagation tray. Although it may not have a big impact at first, as the plant develops, the variety will have a greater influence on its care.
For example, Royal Dwarf and Haze Berry varieties are ideal for indoor cultivation thanks to their small size, while Skunk varieties are very resistant plants but difficult to maintain indoors as they can reach up to 2 meters in height.
Sow the seeds
Once you have all your materials, fill the propagation tray with soil up to the rim and water it until it is thoroughly moist. If your tray has a supplementary tray that sits underneath, pour a little water into that as well.
Make a hole about a centimetre deep with a stick and place a couple of marijuana seeds in it. Then, cover them with soil without compacting it so that the plants have no difficulty in emerging.
If your tray has a lid, put it on to trap the moisture inside, otherwise you can use plastic. Finally, place the tray in a safe, dark place with adequate humidity and a temperature between 22°C and 25°C.
Take care of the tray
Cannabis seeds take between 4 and 10 days to germinate. During this time, you need to make sure the conditions in the tray are right: seeds require a humidity of between 70% and 90%, which you can identify by water droplets on the lid or cover. If the soil has a greenish appearance, it could be mold, indicating excess moisture. If you don’t see any water buildup or the soil looks dry, you can moisten it with a water sprayer.
Transplant the seedlings
A couple of weeks after germination, your marijuana should be a seedling about 10 centimeters tall, too big for the germination tray. Being careful not to damage the roots, transplant it into a larger pot or directly into the ground.
And that’s it! You have successfully planted your marijuana seeds using your propagation tray. Now you will need to continue caring for your seedlings for approximately 3 months in order to enjoy a joint made with your own weed.
How to germinate marijuana cuttings in propagation trays?
Prepare the trays
Since your cuttings should not be exposed to the elements, it is crucial to prepare the material before cutting them. Fill the propagation tray with substrate and moisten it with water.
Choose your cuttings
Before planting the cuttings, select the mother plant from which you will obtain them. It is advisable to choose the healthiest and most robust plant or the one that promises the best flowering.
Using a clean and disinfected tool and wearing gloves to avoid bacteria, cut the branches of your marijuana to obtain the cuttings, keeping a length of two nodes and cutting at a 45° angle.
Planting and caring for cuttings
Moisten the cutting with a little organic rooting agent before planting it in the soil of the propagation tray, leaving about 2/3 of the cutting out of the soil. Repeat this process to plant all of your cuttings.
Place the tray in a bright and humid location. Check the cuttings daily and water them with a water sprayer when needed. If any cuttings die, remove them immediately to prevent the spread of mold and disease.
Transplant the plants
After about 10 days, your cuttings should have rooted. Five days later, i.e. 15 days in total since you planted your cuttings, they should have developed roots about 3 to 5 centimeters long. This is the time to transplant them into another growing medium, either a larger pot or directly into the ground.
