class="ez-toc-section-end">

Electrical conductivity in indoor growing increases as the concentration of dissolved salts in the water rises. Mineral fertilizers provide nutrients in ionic form and, when they are added to the irrigation solution, the EC normally increases as well.

A high reading indicates a greater total concentration of salts, while a low reading indicates a lower concentration. However, there is no single value that can be considered high or low in every situation. The development stage, type of growing system, genetics, substrate, water quality, fertilization program and environmental conditions all influence the appropriate range.

For this reason, EC should not be interpreted as an isolated value. It is much more useful to observe how measurements evolve over time and relate them to the appearance of the plants and the values obtained from runoff.

High EC in indoor growing

A high EC in indoor growing means that there is a high concentration of dissolved ions and salts compared with the expected range for that crop and stage of development.

When the concentration of salts around the roots becomes too high, the plant’s ability to absorb water normally decreases. This phenomenon is related to osmotic stress: even when water is available in the substrate, the roots need to work harder to absorb it.

If this situation continues for too long, growth may be affected and damage associated with excessive salinity or nutritional imbalances may appear.

Symptoms of high EC

The symptoms of high EC can be confused with other problems, so visual observation should always be accompanied by measurements. Possible signs include:

Damaged or dry leaf tips or edges.

Excessively dark leaves when nitrogen fertilization is high.

Slower or stalled growth.

General loss of vigor.

Lower water consumption in certain situations.

Visible salt deposits or crusts on some substrates or containers.

Runoff EC progressively higher than the input EC.

A burnt tip or curled leaf does not, by itself, prove that EC is too high. Temperature, humidity, root problems, pH, nutrient composition and other factors can produce similar symptoms. Measuring EC makes it possible to determine whether there really is a high concentration of salts.

Why can EC rise too high?

One of the most common causes is using a fertilizer concentration higher than necessary. However, high EC can also occur even when the doses being used appear correct.

The source water may already have a high EC due to the minerals it contains. If fertilizers are subsequently added without taking this initial concentration into account, the final solution can reach excessively high values.

An excess of salts in the substrate can also occur when fertilizers are applied repeatedly and salts that are not absorbed gradually concentrate around the roots. High evaporation and improper irrigation management can contribute to this process.

Excess salts in the substrate

An excess of salts in the substrate cannot always be detected by measuring only the solution entering the pot. An irrigation solution may have an apparently appropriate EC while the concentration around the roots is considerably higher.

For this reason, in systems where runoff can be collected, comparing the input EC with the runoff EC can provide additional information.

If runoff EC rises progressively and remains clearly above the EC of the applied solution, salts may be accumulating in the root zone. A single different measurement should not lead to drastic changes; observing the trend over several irrigation cycles is much more useful.

How to lower EC

To understand how to lower EC, we first need to distinguish between an overly concentrated nutrient solution and salt buildup within the substrate.

EC too high in the reservoir

If the solution is measured before irrigation and the EC is above the established target, one of the simplest ways to reduce it is to add water with a lower conductivity.

This should be done gradually: add water, mix thoroughly, wait for the solution to become homogeneous and measure again. This helps avoid overcorrecting the EC.

It is also advisable to check the EC of irrigation water before adding fertilizers. If the source water already contains a significant concentration of minerals, there will be less room to add nutrients.

EC too high in the substrate

When measurements indicate salt buildup in the root zone, it may be necessary to temporarily reduce the concentration of the applied solution and increase runoff in a controlled manner to help remove accumulated salts.

There is no universal amount of water that should be used for this correction. The appropriate volume depends on the type of substrate, container size, growing system, degree of accumulation and plant response.

Applying large amounts of water without assessing these variables can cause other problems, especially in substrates with high moisture retention. For this reason, it is preferable to monitor how EC changes and make gradual corrections.

Low EC in indoor growing

A low EC in indoor growing indicates that the total concentration of dissolved ions is low. Depending on the growing system and development stage, this may mean that the nutrient solution contains fewer nutrients than required.

However, a low EC does not automatically prove that there is a nutrient deficiency. EC measures total conductivity, but it does not identify which nutrients are present or determine on its own whether nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium or another element is lacking.

For this reason, before increasing fertilization, it is advisable to check the nutrient program, pH, water quality and overall appearance of the plant.

Symptoms of low EC

Possible symptoms of low EC, when nutrition is genuinely insufficient, may include:

Slower growth than expected.

Reduced overall vigor.

Lighter leaf coloration.

Yellowing associated with certain nutrient deficiencies.

Reduced development of stems and new shoots.

Lower biomass production than expected.

These symptoms are not exclusive to low EC either. An unsuitable pH can limit the availability of certain nutrients even when the solution has an apparently correct EC. Root and environmental problems can also produce similar signs.

How to raise EC

To understand how to raise EC correctly, it is not enough to add any product until a particular value is reached. The appropriate approach is to gradually increase the concentration of the fertilizers included in the nutrient program being used.

After each adjustment, the solution should be mixed thoroughly, the reading allowed to stabilize and the EC measured again. Gradual changes make it possible to observe how the crop responds and reduce the risk of quickly moving from an insufficient concentration to an excessive one.

It is also important to remember that a specific EC does not guarantee balanced nutrition. Two solutions with an EC of 1.5 mS/cm can contain completely different proportions of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium and other elements.

What happens when we use reverse osmosis water?

Water produced by reverse osmosis generally has very low mineral content and therefore a low initial EC. This provides greater control when preparing the nutrient solution, but it also means that mineral input will depend largely on the fertilization program.

In certain programs, calcium and magnesium may need to be supplied using the corresponding products, especially when the base fertilizer has been formulated with a certain level of water mineralization in mind. The required amount should be determined according to water composition, the fertilizer being used and the manufacturer’s recommendations, rather than automatically trying to reach a specific base EC.

EC of irrigation water: the starting point

The EC of irrigation water should be measured before adding fertilizers. This value makes it possible to determine how much of the conductivity comes from the water itself and how much it increases when the nutrient solution is prepared.

For example, preparing a final solution of 1.5 mS/cm using water with an EC of 0.1 mS/cm is not the same as using water with an EC of 0.8 mS/cm. Although the final value is identical, the quantity and nature of the minerals present may be different.

This difference explains why copying exactly the fertilizer dose used by another grower does not guarantee the same final EC.

Runoff EC: a tool for understanding the root zone

Runoff EC complements the information obtained from the input solution. In coco and other soilless growing systems, observing the difference between the two measurements can help identify trends in salt concentration.

If a solution with a particular EC is repeatedly applied and the runoff shows increasingly higher values, it is worth investigating what is happening in the root environment. There may be progressive salt buildup, insufficient drainage or an imbalance between water and nutrient uptake.

Interpretation should take the growing system into account. Soil, coco and hydroponics behave differently, so a specific difference between input and runoff should not be applied as a universal rule.

The importance of using a reliable EC meter

To correctly identify a high EC in indoor growing or a low EC in indoor growing, having a reliable EC meter is essential. Trying to adjust nutrient concentration based solely on the appearance of the plants can lead to incorrect interpretations, as many symptoms associated with nutrition, pH or root problems can look similar.

An EC meter makes it possible to quickly check electrical conductivity in indoor growing and work with actual measurements. It can be used to measure the EC of irrigation water before adding fertilizers, check the nutrient solution once it has been prepared and analyze the runoff EC when the growing system allows runoff to be collected.

At Hydroponics Blanes, we recommend using EC meters suitable for growing and keeping them properly calibrated. In our online store, growshopweb.com offers EC meters and measuring equipment for monitoring nutrient solutions and enabling more precise fertilization management.

In addition to the meter itself, it is advisable to have the appropriate calibration solutions and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. An incorrectly calibrated meter may display an apparently correct reading when the actual value is different, causing unnecessary increases or reductions in fertilizer concentration.

Medidor EC

When should EC be measured?

There is no need to wait for symptoms of high EC or symptoms of low EC to appear. Regular measurements make it possible to identify trends before the imbalance becomes obvious. As a practical reference, the EC of the source water can be checked, measured again after preparing the nutrient solution and runoff monitored periodically.

Recording these measurements is particularly useful. If the runoff EC progressively increases over several irrigation cycles while the input EC remains stable, this provides a signal to review fertilization management, irrigation and possible salt buildup.

High and low EC in soil, coco and hydroponics

EC in soil

Soil has the ability to retain and exchange nutrients and acts as a buffering medium. For this reason, a single measurement of irrigation water does not fully describe the concentration available around the roots.

When EC problems occur in soil, aggressive corrections based solely on one reading should be avoided. Moisture, drainage, previous fertilization and the overall condition of the plants should also be considered.

EC in coco

In coco, it is particularly useful to compare the input EC with the runoff EC. Because fertigation is commonly used, recording both measurements makes it possible to observe how salt concentration changes in the root zone.

If runoff shows an upward trend over several irrigation cycles, it may be necessary to review the concentration of the solution, irrigation frequency and runoff percentage.

EC in hydroponics

In hydroponics, roots depend directly on the nutrient solution. For this reason, changes in EC are particularly important and regular measurements are advisable.

As the water level in the reservoir decreases, EC may rise or fall depending on the relationship between water and nutrient uptake. Automatically adding fertilizer every time the reservoir level drops can eventually alter the nutritional balance.

Why shouldn’t EC be corrected suddenly?

Whether the goal is to lower EC or to raise EC, gradual adjustments are preferable to sudden changes. A significant variation in solution concentration rapidly changes the osmotic conditions around the roots.

A more controlled strategy is to measure, make a moderate correction, measure again and observe the crop’s response. Recording the values also helps identify trends and prevents decisions from being based on a single reading.

Common mistakes when interpreting high or low EC

Assuming that high EC always means overfertilization.

Automatically interpreting low EC as a nutrient deficiency.

Adding fertilizers solely to reach a specific value.

Not measuring the EC of irrigation water before preparing the nutrient solution.

Ignoring the runoff EC when the system allows it to be measured.

Making sudden changes in concentration.

Confusing symptoms caused by pH, root problems or environmental conditions with EC problems.

Using the same EC range for every development stage and growing system.

How to use EC to make better decisions

EC becomes especially useful when we stop viewing it as an isolated number and begin analyzing trends. Using a properly calibrated EC meter to measure the EC of irrigation water, recording the solution after adding nutrients and periodically checking the runoff EC provides a better understanding of what is happening in the root zone.

If we detect a high EC in indoor growing, the goal should not be to immediately reduce it to a generic value, but rather to determine why it is increasing. Likewise, when faced with a low EC in indoor growing, increasing the fertilizer dose without checking other parameters may create a problem that did not initially exist.

Combining EC measurements with pH monitoring, plant observation, water quality and an appropriate nutrient program allows much more precise adjustments and helps prevent both insufficient nutrition and an excess of salts in the substrate.

At Hydroponics Blanes, this blog is intended for informational purposes only.
