In this guide, we explain the principle, the materials required, the key points of the process and the precautions to take into account. Before starting, it is important to distinguish between two processes that are often confused. Preparing a vegetable oil infused with cannabis is very different from carrying out a concentrated extraction using alcohols or other solvents. we talk about homemade cannabis oil in the context of an infusion recipe, we are referring to a vegetable oil, usually olive or coconut oil, used as a fatty base to incorporate certain components found in the plant material. Cannabinoids have an affinity for fats, which is why vegetable oils are commonly used as a carrier in this type of preparation. The result should not be confused with concentrated extracts obtained using solvents or with commercial CBD oils that contain known and analysed concentrations of cannabinoids.

Ingredients for preparing cannabis oil

Plant material permitted under the applicable regulations.

Olive oil, coconut oil or another vegetable oil suitable for food use.

Heat-resistant container.

Fine strainer, cheesecloth or suitable filter.

Clean glass jar with a lid.

The amount of oil will depend on the volume of plant material and the type of preparation desired. It is preferable to work with moderate amounts and avoid excessively concentrated preparations when the composition of the material used is not precisely known.

When should olive oil or coconut oil be added?

This was the point that was not correctly explained in the previous version of our recipe. Olive oil or coconut oil forms the base of the infusion and should therefore be added during the plant material infusion stage. It is not added after evaporating alcohol and is not part of a solvent extraction process. In an infused oil recipe, the vegetable oil and the prepared plant material remain together during a controlled heating stage to encourage the transfer of fat-soluble components into the fatty phase.

Preparing the plant material beforehand

In many recipes, a thermal stage known as decarboxylation is carried out beforehand. During this process, certain cannabinoids initially present in acidic form can be transformed through the action of heat. The final composition depends on numerous factors: plant variety, storage condition, initial cannabinoid content, duration, temperature and the characteristics of the starting material. For this reason, a homemade preparation does not make it possible to know the final concentration accurately without laboratory analysis.

How to make an oil infusion

Once the plant material has been prepared, it is mixed with the chosen olive oil or coconut oil. The aim is to apply gentle, controlled heat, avoiding excessive temperatures and stirring periodically to encourage even distribution. The oil should not boil or be exposed directly to a flame. When working with any oil-based food preparation, it is advisable to use suitable containers, monitor the temperature and avoid overheating. Once the infusion is complete, allow the mixture to cool slightly before filtering.

Filtering the oil

The next step is to separate the plant residues from the oil using cheesecloth, a fine strainer or a suitable filtration system. Filtering should be carried out carefully to reduce the amount of plant particles present in the final product. It is not necessary to use alcohol in this process. The vegetable oil used from the beginning directly forms the base of the finished product.

How to store cannabis oil

Once filtered and cooled, the oil can be stored in a clean, closed container, preferably made from dark glass. Prolonged exposure to light, heat and air can contribute to the degradation of vegetable oils and various components present in the preparation. It is advisable to keep the container clearly labelled and out of reach of children and animals. If the oil develops an unusual smell, obvious changes in appearance or signs of deterioration, it should not be used.

Olive oil or coconut oil: which one should you choose?

Olive oil is a common choice because it is easy to find, has good stability and can be used in many culinary preparations. It also provides a characteristic flavour that should be taken into account depending on the intended use. Coconut oil contains a high proportion of saturated fats and has a different texture depending on the ambient temperature. This characteristic makes it practical for certain recipes or cosmetic preparations. The choice between the two mainly depends on the intended use, desired texture, flavour and personal preferences.

Difference between infused oil and alcohol extraction

It is important not to confuse these two processes. An infused oil directly uses a vegetable fat as a carrier. Extraction with ethanol or other solvents, on the other hand, involves separating certain compounds from the plant using a solvent and subsequently removing that solvent. This second technique requires significantly greater precautions. Alcohol vapours can ignite in the presence of flames, sparks, electrical heating elements or other ignition sources. For this reason, at Hydroponics Blanes, we do not recommend carrying out at-home evaporation of ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. We also do not recommend using isopropyl alcohol in preparations intended for ingestion. When a preparation requires solvent extraction and subsequent solvent removal, it should be carried out using suitable equipment and professional procedures.

Can CBD oil be made this way?

It is important to distinguish between a homemade infused vegetable oil and a commercial CBD oil with a specified concentration. In a homemade preparation, it is not possible to know how many milligrams of CBD, THC or other cannabinoids are contained in each millilitre without carrying out an analysis. Properly analysed commercial products make it possible to know the concentration stated by the manufacturer, while a homemade infusion may show significant variations even when apparently using the same amount of plant material.

Precautions when preparing cannabis oil

The preparation should always be carried out in accordance with the legislation applicable in each country and using only legally permitted materials. It is also important to remember that a homemade preparation has an unknown cannabinoid concentration. For this reason, it should not be used as a substitute for medical treatments, nor should therapeutic properties be attributed to it without medical validation. People who take medication, are pregnant, have diagnosed medical conditions or wish to use products containing CBD or cannabinoids for health-related reasons should consult a healthcare professional beforehand.

Frequently asked questions about homemade cannabis oil

At what stage should the oil be added?

Olive oil, coconut oil or another vegetable base is added during the infusion stage. It should not be added after alcohol evaporation in this recipe because the process described does not use solvents.

Is it necessary to use ethanol?

No. To prepare an infused vegetable oil, it is not necessary to use ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. The oil itself acts as the extraction medium for the fat-soluble components.

Can I let ethanol evaporate naturally?

We do not recommend this procedure in a domestic environment. Ethanol produces flammable vapours, and an accumulation of vapour can create a fire risk in the presence of an ignition source.

How can I know how much CBD the oil contains?

It cannot be determined accurately from a homemade recipe alone. To know the actual concentration of CBD, THC and other cannabinoids, an analysis of the final product is required.

Where should I store the finished oil?

After filtering, the oil should be stored in a clean, tightly closed jar, protected from direct light and heat sources. Dark glass containers are particularly practical for this type of storage. Preparing homemade cannabis oil by infusing it in olive or coconut oil makes it easier to understand how this type of preparation works without resorting to flammable solvents. The most important point is to clearly distinguish a plant infusion from a concentrated extraction and always work within the applicable legal framework.

Preparing homemade cannabis oil by infusing it into a vegetable oil is one of the simplest ways to combine the plant’s components with a fatty base such as olive oil or coconut oil.
