Why set up an indoor grow tent?
Advantages over outdoor cultivation
- Greater discretion and odor control.
- Year-round cultivation regardless of the weather.
- Protection against pests, rain, or frost.
- Total control over light, temperature, and humidity.
Is it legal to have a grow tent at home?
In Spain, personal cultivation in private spaces is not penalized, as long as there is no evidence of trafficking. However, each autonomous community may have different criteria, so it is advisable to be well informed about current regulations.
What do you need to set up an indoor grow tent?
Grow Tent
This is a closed, reflective structure designed to house the plants and the entire growing system. They come in various sizes, such as 60×60, 100×100, or even 120×120, depending on the available space and the number of plants.
Lighting (LED, HPS, LEC)
Marijuana plants require controlled light and dark cycles. LED grow lights for indoor grows are the most popular option due to their energy efficiency and low heat output. You can also opt for HPS or LEC bulbs, although they require more ventilation.
Ventilation and extraction system
A grow tent requires constant air renewal. It’s essential to have an extractor fan, an intractor, and a carbon filter to eliminate odors.
Substrate and pots
The most common substrate is a mix of peat and perlite or coco coir. Choose 7-11L pots for autoflowering plants and 11-18L pots for feminized plants.
Seeds (autoflowering or feminized)
Autoflowering seeds are faster and easier to grow. Feminized seeds require more control but can produce higher yields.
Fertilizers and pH meters
You will need specific fertilizers for each phase of the crop, as well as pH and EC meters.
Timer and other useful accessories
A timer will be key to regulating daylight hours. You can also add thermohygrometers, dehumidifiers, or thermal blankets.
Step-by-step guide to setting up your grow tent
Step 1: Choose the right location
Find a discreet, well-ventilated space with access to electrical outlets. Make sure the floor is firm and the surroundings don’t accumulate moisture.
Step 2: Assembling the structure
Unpack the closet and assemble the metal frame. Place the reflective sheeting, making sure it’s securely closed.
Step 3: Installing the Lighting
Secure the LED or HPS light to the ceiling of the grow tent using adjustable pulleys. Connect it to a timer and set a lighting cycle: for example, 18 hours of light and 6 hours of darkness for vegetation.
Step 4: Installing the Vent and Carbon Filter
Place the extractor fan at the top of the cabinet and the intractor (or passive intake) at the bottom. Connect the carbon filter to the extractor fan.
Step 5: Preparing the substrate and sowing the seeds
Fill the pots with soil, moisten it, and plant the seeds. You can germinate them first on damp cloths before transplanting.
Step 6: Controlling Temperature, Humidity, and Irrigation
Keep the temperature between 22 and 26 °C and the humidity between 60% and 70%. Water with pH-regulated water (5.8 – 6.5).
Tips for maintenance and successful cultivation
Daily environmental review
Check temperature, humidity, leaf condition, and possible pests. Early detection will prevent bigger problems.
Light cycles and odor control
Maintain a strict light-dark schedule. Replace activated carbon filters every 3-6 months.
Pest and disease prevention
Clean the environment, do not reuse contaminated substrates, and use natural insecticides if you detect pests or fungi.
