What is a cookie?
A cookie is a harmless text file stored in your browser when you visit almost any website. The purpose of the cookie is to allow the website to remember your visit when you return. Although many people are unaware of it, cookies have been used for over 20 years, since the advent of the first browsers for the World Wide Web.
What is NOT a cookie?
It is not a virus, trojan, worm, spam, spyware, nor does it open pop-up windows.
What information does a cookie store?
Cookies generally do not store sensitive personal information such as credit card numbers, bank details, photos, ID numbers, or personal data. The data they store is technical, like personal preferences, content customization, etc.
The web server does not associate you as a person but rather your web browser. In fact, if you usually browse with Internet Explorer and try browsing the same website with Firefox or Chrome, you’ll see that the website doesn’t recognize you as the same person because it’s associating with the browser, not the individual.
What types of cookies are there?
Technical cookies
These are the most basic and allow, among other things, to determine whether the user is a human or an automated application, whether they are anonymous or logged-in — basic tasks for the functioning of any dynamic website.
Analytics cookies
They collect information on the type of navigation being performed, the most used sections, products viewed, time zone of access, language, etc.
Advertising cookies
They show ads based on your browsing, country of origin, language, etc.
What are first-party and third-party cookies?
First-party cookies are those generated by the page you’re visiting. Third-party cookies are generated by external services or providers such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.
What happens if I disable cookies?
To help you understand the impact of disabling cookies, here are some examples:
- You won’t be able to share content from that website on Facebook, Twitter, or any other social network.
- The website will not be able to adapt its content to your personal preferences, such as in online stores.
- You won’t be able to access the personal area of any website, such as My Account, My Profile, or My Orders.
- Online stores: You won’t be able to make online purchases, they must be made by phone or in a physical store (if available).
- It won’t be possible to personalize your geographic preferences such as time zone, currency, or language.
- The site won’t be able to perform web analytics on visitors and traffic, which will hinder its competitiveness.
- You won’t be able to post on the blog, upload photos, leave comments, rate or review content. The site also won’t be able to tell if you’re human or an automated application posting spam.
- It won’t be possible to show targeted advertising, reducing ad revenue for the site.
- All social networks use cookies. If you disable them, you won’t be able to use any social network.
Can cookies be deleted?
Yes. Not only can they be deleted, but also blocked — either globally or for a specific domain.
